Polish - Ukrainian history of Ivano-Frankivsk
Ivano-Frankivsk city was founded in 1662 by Krakow Hetman Andrzej Potocki and received its name in honor of his father - Stanislaviv (or Stanislaw). The main purpose was to strengthen the borders of Poland from the raids of the Tatars and the Zaporozhye Cossacks.
The city center and all the sights are concentrated in the Market Square and near the Town Hall, which now form historic city center. 17-18 centuries history of Stanislavov passed under the influence of the Baroque era. Now the city is sometimes referred to as "the Little Lviv" because the central planning of streets and temples in architectural style similar to the architectural style in Lviv.
Ivano-Frankivsk was the part of Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary Empire until the First World War. It was mainly inhabited by Poles, and therefore the whole history of Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislaviv) connected with Poland. Only in 1939, Stanislaviv became the part of the USSR, and received its present name only in 1962 after the Ukrainian writer and cultural figure - Ivan Franko.
