Coronavirus: how to reduce the risk of infection?

At the end of December 2019 there was information about a new type of coronavirus infection. The first case was registered in Chinese province Hubei. Today, the virus has penetrated into virtually all countries around the world and received its own designation: COVID-19.

How to reduce the risk of infection? Tips for everyday life

No handshakes or cheek kisses

Even if at first it seems rude, do not shake hands or other contact greetings. Remember, in the current situation it is important to try to avoid any physical contact.

Wash your hands frequently.

Treat your hands with an alcoholic cloth or wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Pay special attention to this process before cooking and eating, as well as when returning home. Always wash your hands after visiting the toilet.

Keep your hands off the face

Pathogens can easily transfer from the hands to the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth. Do not touch your face with dirty hands.

Cough and sneeze properly

We are all used to covering our mouths with our palms when we cough, but this only helps to spread the infection, because the virus, which is left in the palm of our hand, is easily transmitted by touch. So do not cough in the palm, try to do it in a napkin or in the fold of your elbow.

Immediately throw away used disposable handkerchiefs

Place disposable handkerchiefs and wipes in the trash immediately after use and remember to wash your hands. Use a bucket with a garbage bag that can be tightly closed and regularly discarded, replacing with a new one.

Regularly ventilate the rooms

In enclosed spaces, the number of viruses in the air can increase dramatically. Regular ventilation of the room (three or four times a day for ten minutes) counteracts this and reduces the risk of infection. It also improves the climate in the room and prevents the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose from drying out.

Keep your distance and avoid obstacles

When coughing, keep as far away from other people as possible. It should be at least 1 meter. This way you can avoid inhaling COVID-19-containing droplets if the person next to you is infected.

Pay attention to the first symptoms

If you have a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, see a doctor as soon as possible. Important: If you suspect coronavirus, you should leave the patient in a separate room and call a doctor.

When to use a face mask

WHO recommends wearing the mask only when you are caring for a person with suspected COVID-19 infection, or coughing or sneezing yourself. In this case, the mask is designed to protect the people around you.

Avoid common items

Avoid common items, regularly clean surfaces and devices you touch (computer keyboard, office equipment panels, smartphone screen, consoles, door handles and handrails). If you think the object may be contaminated or contaminated, treat it with a disinfectant and then wash your hands. Do not eat from shared packages or dishes (this also applies to nuts, chips and other snacks).
